Goal

I KNOW how to respond quickly to signals.
I REACT by choosing the correct direction when I hear the number

Success criteria

Children correctly interpret the signal and react quickly and appropriately — either by escaping or tagging

Environment/Space/Equipment

Shallow swimming pool where children can stand. No equipment needed. Approx. 2x5 meters per pair.

Experienced can use deeper water – instructor is responsible for making it safe from the poolside.

Group management

Pairs. Children stand back-to-back. Instructor gives auditory cues and ensures safety by overseeing all pairs.

Time/Duration/Schedule

5-15 minutes.

Best suited for warm-up or mid-lesson focus activity.

Pre-requisite

Comfort in water, basic ability to move/swim forward quickly.

Description

Two participants stand back-to-back in the water. When the instructor shouts a signal (e.g., a number, color or character), one child must escape (swim forward), while the other tries to tag them.

Progression: Use visual signals or vary the trigger. Add complexity with multiple pairs starting at once.
