Exercise

Goal

I CAN glide
I KNOW how far I can glide

Success criteria

Be able to position yourself at maximum gliding distance to reach the wall (minimum distance of 5 metres without kicking, distance of 5 meters with kicking without breathing)

Environment/Space/Equipment

In shallow water, with distances of 10 meters from the edge.

Group management

The pupils choose how far from the edge they want to position themselves. Each pupil has a swimming path perpendicular to the edge.

The teacher announces to the class whether kicking are permitted or not.

Time/Duration/Schedule

The exercise takes about 10 minutes and can be organised at any time during the lesson.

Pre-requisite

To complete this exercise, pupils must be able to put their head under water, hold their breath for 5-10 seconds and float on their front and back.

Description

The instructor organises his group in the shallow pool. He asks the students to position themselves at a distance from the wall that they can reach by gliding, without lifting their heads out of the water. They can use kicks or not, depending on the situation. The aim is to position themselves as far away from the wall as possible while still being able to complete the task.

Key teaching points to support student learning:
Take a deep breath at the start
Lie flat on the surface of the water.
Make yourself as big as possible by placing your arms in front of your head.
Hide your head under your arms.
Be as strong as possible.
Adjust the next attempt based on the success or failure of the previous one.
