Goal

I CAN put on a life jacket in the water and tow the person using buoyancy equipment.
I KNOW what a life jacket is for, that when I am wearing a life jacket I am safer on my own and can help others.
I FEEL competent to keep myself safe. More confident in helping others when I’m wearing a lifejacket.

Success criteria

Wear a lifejacket independently and tow to a defined point.

The towing person must not help with propulsion movements of legs or arms.

Environment/Space/Equipment

Deep water, swimming pool, open water.

Lifejackets for all the participants (the size of the lifejacket does not have to be adjusted to the child).

Group management

The task is performed individually/in pair person after person on the given distance, in lanes/freely

The task can be performed in small or larger groups, depending on participants' swimming skills, along or across the body of water.

Instructor outside the pool.

Safety guaranteed by lifeguard.

Time/duration/schedule

Minimum of 2 attempts for each child on given distance.

Approximately 10 minutes.

Pre-requisite

Basic swimming skills

Description

Lifejackets are scattered in deep water, a short distance from the shore. On a signal, children jump into the water and swim toward the life jackets in their preferred way. When they reach the target, they put the jacket on themselves. Then they pair up and begin to freely tow the buddy, who is lying on the back.

After being towed to a defined point, the roles change.
