Experiment

Goal

I CAN swim while carrying a heavy load.
I KNOW when I have to come back to ensure my safety

Success criteria

Being able to return to the starting point with heavy loads

Environment/Space/Equipment

In deep water, near the edge where a set of heavy loads are placed lengthwise.

Group management

The pupils work in pairs, one in the water and the other following them from the edge and helping them to gradually get heavier.

Time/Duration/Schedule

The exercise lasts approximately 5 minutes. The pupils switch roles, which allows them to rest. Depending on their successes or failures, pupils can adjust their action plan.

Pre-requisite

Pupils are able to swim at least 25 metres on their front and on their back. They are also able to tread water for 15 seconds.

Description

The student swims along the edge. Every 5 metres, he picks up a heavy object (which they may or may not attach, depending on the equipment). He decides when to turn around so that he can bring all the weights back to the starting point.

Key teaching points to support student learning:
·       Do not overestimate yourself during the first attempts.
·       Anticipate the fatigue you will experience on the return journey; do not wait until you are tired to make the decision to return.
·       Emphasise swimming on your back when returning and towing-type actions.

Teaching strategy:
·       Let the pupils try it out for themselves first.
·       Discuss with them the concept of anticipating fatigue so that they can always return to the shore.
